Shopping San Jose del Cabo’s Vibrant Gallery District to Discover Baja’s Best Mexican Art & Craftsmanship
Nestled at the southern tip of Baja California, just 30 minutes from the bustling vibe of Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo is a serene oasis filled with colonial charm, delicious restaurants, and an extraordinary art scene. This enchanting town has become a must-visit destination for art lovers, culture enthusiasts, and travelers seeking an immersive experience in Mexico’s rich artistic heritage.
San Jose del Cabo Missionary Church
I had the pleasure of visiting San Jose del Cabo during the Festival de San José, a week-long celebration honoring the city’s patron saint, Saint Joseph. The lively festivities included traditional music, folkloric dancing, parades, and stunning floral displays that transformed the streets into a vibrant canvas of color and culture.
One of the most delightful sights was watching skilled florists weave elaborate bouquets and garlands while nearby artisans meticulously prepared a spectacular fireworks display on towering, handcrafted frames.
Discovering San Jose del Cabo’s Flourishing Art Scene
Tucked behind the town’s historic main square and missionary church, the San Jose del Cabo Gallery District is home to a curated collection of galleries and boutiques showcasing original paintings, sculptures, photography, handcrafted jewelry, and indigenous art.
Each Thursday evening from October through June, the district comes alive with its famous Art Walk. This event has become Baja Sur’s premier cultural attraction, drawing art lovers from around the world.
From traditional Mexican folk art to contemporary masterpieces, here’s a glimpse into some of the most inspiring galleries and artisan studios that make San Jose del Cabo a creative paradise.
The Glass Factory: Handblown Mexican Glass with Heart
While this workshop is not located in San Jose del Cabo itself, a stop at The Glass Factory on your way from Cabo San Lucas is an absolute must. Here, artisans practice the centuries-old technique of traditional glassblowing, crafting nearly 500 one-of-a-kind glass pieces daily. Many of these glass creations are custom orders for local hotels, restaurants, and shops.
Visitors to The Glass Factory can watch these skilled artisans transform molten glass into exquisite vessels, dishware, and decorative pieces right before their eyes.
Feeling the intense heat of the ovens while witnessing the intricate process of blowing glass through a long tube is mesmerizing. The transformation of each piece—using different metal oxides to create brilliant hues of amber, blue, green, and more—is nothing short of magical.
Afterward, visitors can browse rows of shimmering glass creations, including handblown hearts and stars in every color of the rainbow, perfect for a memorable keepsake. Purchases are expertly packed for transport or can be shipped home.
La Sacristía: Sharing Mexico’s Art & History with the World
A treasure trove of authentic Mexican craftsmanship, La Sacristía is a gallery that celebrates Mexico’s vibrant artistic traditions. Featuring a stunning collection of paintings, wood carvings, pottery, whimsical ceramic sculptures, silver jewelry encrusted with natural shells and gemstones, and intricate Huichol yarn and beadwork, this gallery is a dream come true for art lovers.
One of the highlights of my visit was watching a Huichol artisan bead a bottle with remarkable precision, using an uncommon guitar-string technique to create intricate patterns. This level of craftsmanship and cultural storytelling makes La Sacristía a must-visit destination for collectors and admirers of Mexican folk art.
Sotomayor Sculptor Gallery: From Reclaimed Metal to Masterpieces
For over 37 years, Juan Sotomayor has transformed discarded metal, nails, gears, and chains into breathtaking sculptures. His talent to reimagine scrap metal materials into detailed works of art is awe-inspiring. From life-size sealions and swimming tortoises, to busts of chain hair and angel wings, each piece is a creative masterpiece.
At the heart of Juan’s art lies a deeper message. His sculptures seek to raise awareness of the power of second chances as he transforms discarded metal into stunning pieces of art. Wandering through Juan’s gallery and outdoor exhibition space, visitors gain insight into his creative process and the deep connection he has with Mexico and its natural spaces.
Ivan Guaderrama Gallery: Interactive Art that Comes to Life
Stepping into artist Ivan Guaderrama’s Gallery is like entering a world of color, light, and sound. A deeply spiritual artist, Ivan blends faith and technology to create interactive art that responds to touch and movement.
As you ascend the musical light-up staircase leading to this remarkable gallery, you know you’re about to witness something magical. At first, you are greeted by joyful smiling portraits of Jesus, which warm your heart and fill it with hope.
Next, you’re enveloped in a sea of color and whimsy as you are transported to Ivan’s magical gallery of technology. Ivan’s paintings-often depicting angels, hearts, and joyful figures—come to life through his custom-designed software and apps, making this artistic experience truly immersive and unforgettable.
Whether it’s a painting of a piano with a keyboard that plays with the touch of your hand, or a playful dog chasing the stars in a Van Gough reproduction print, Ivan’s work leaves a lasting impression of awe and amazement.

This spacious, airy and light-filled gallery represents over 60 of Mexico’s most acclaimed contemporary artists, many of which have also exhibited in prestigious art museums across the country. Featuring work by artist Enrique Santos Salvado, Tree Bark Art Gallery pays homage to the ancient art of crafting Amate paper from the bark of indigenous trees in Puebla, Mexico. Whether the design features a fanciful sea creature or a traditional Indigenous print, each piece is intricately woven with texture and color using this natural medium. Indian Hands: A Celebration of Mexican Craftsmanship
A colorful boutique filled with handcrafted wood carvings, woven textiles, tooled leather goods, and traditional folk art, Indian Hands is a shopper’s paradise. I was particularly drawn to their embellished cow skulls, Katrina dolls, and Huichol beadwork, which showcase the diversity of Mexico’s artisan communities. The gallery also features breathtaking portraits and nature-inspired paintings by owner-artist Ivan Hernandez Olivera. @Indian.hands
